Get to Know Tundra Travels!

Alaska backcountry guides - Haley Johnston

OH HEY THERE 👋
I’M HALEY JOHNSTON, OWNER AND LEAD GUIDE AT TUNDRA TRAVELS. I’M SO STOKED THAT YOU ARE HERE!

LAUNCHING THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN A LABOR OF LOVE, JOY, AND – IN THE TIME OF COVID- UNCERTAINTY. BUT I’M EXCITED TO SHARE A BIT ABOUT OUR STORY AND HOW TUNDRA TRAVELS CAME TO BE. CHEERS!

I have been guiding wilderness trips and going on personal adventures in Alaska’s backcountry for more than a decade. It has been such a pleasure to share remote corners of Alaska with folks from all over the world. Guiding someone on their first off-trail backpacking trip, solving the world’s problems over morning coffees and evening sips of bourbon, silently watching the critters that call wild Alaska home, these are just some of the amazing moments I have been lucky enough to share with guests and friends. I have traveled thousands of miles by foot, packraft and skis, spent hundreds of nights in my sleeping bag and had dozens of thoughtful conversations with trip partners. Along the way my deep love for Alaska’s public lands has intensified and I have worried about the myriad threats to these incredible ecosystems. For years, I have been searching for a way to combine my twin passions for Alaskan backcountry travel and public lands conservation. Tundra Travels is the product of that search.

Tundra Travels is driven by a mission to connect adventurous travelers with Alaska’s wildest places. we believe the perfect backcountry trip is authentic, treads lightly and gives back.

    • At Tundra Travels an authentic adventure is a real, expedition-style trip, complete with physically and mentally challenging elements. If you’re looking for a walk in the park, go take a walk in a park. If you’re looking for a life changing challenge, come on a Tundra Travels trip.
    • Treading lightly means following the principles of Leave No Trace©, but also offsetting the carbon from our transportation, a paperless reservation system, only using durable long lasting equipment and striving to minimize waste in our food packing. We hope to be a model for a more sustainable style of wilderness travel.
    • Giving back means that each of our trips makes a meaningful financial contribution to an environmental nonprofit working to protect the areas where we adventure. Healthy, intact ecosystems are the very foundation of our trips and it is our responsibility to help protect them.

I am so stoked to incorporate these values into what we’re building at Tundra Travels. It feels good to finally be going live with our new website to share this vision for environmentally responsible backcountry adventures in Alaska. And I can’t wait for our inaugural season in summer 2021 as we explore some of my favorite destinations. Tundra Travels is on a mission to connect adventurous travelers (Like you! Ya, you!) with Alaska’s wildest landscapes while supporting wildlife conservation, community-led advocacy and intact ecosystems.

I hope you’ll join us on this adventure! ✌️-Haley
